Scott Bishop, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist

 

Dr. Scott Bishop is an esteemed psychologist, psychoanalyst and educator with over 25 years of experience working with mental health.  He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Dalhousie University and did his psychoanalytic training at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis.  He is a registered psychologist in both Nova Scotia and Ontario, a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program at Dalhousie University, and on Faculty and a Supervising Analyst at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis.

 

Dr. Bishop has held positions in university-affiliated teaching hospitals, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.  For the past 25 years, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and a professor and supervisor of psychiatry residents at the University Health Network. He has also taught in the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Toronto Psychoanalytic Institute, the Institute for the Advancement of Self-Psychology, and the Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health Program at the University of Toronto.

 

Dr. Bishop is expert in working effectively with people who are struggling with a range of psychological problems of varying complexity. He specializes in working with adult- or childhood-onset psychological trauma, including complex and severe forms of posttraumatic stress disorder and dissociative disorders, as well as severe personality disorders that can result from repeated early childhood trauma and neglect. He also treats  anxiety, addictions, anger, behavioural problems, mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and depression, body image issues and eating disorders, pain, phobias, psychosis, relationship issues, sexual dysfunction, sleep problems, and stress and burnout.

 

Dr. Bishop is committed to using evidence-based models of psychotherapy, interventions that are shown to effectively provide sustained alleviation of symptoms and foster lasting changes in thinking, mood and behaviour. He bases his practice in psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based therapies. 

 

Dr. Bishop is happy to have recently returned home to Nova Scotia and to join the team at CRUX Psychology. Dr. Bishop offers individual therapy services both in person and online through easy-to-use technologies like Jane. Dr. Bishop works with adults (19 years of age or older). Dr. Bishop is a licensed psychologist registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario and the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology. Psychologists who are fully registered in other Canadian jurisdictions (such as Ontario and Nova Scotia) can provide online services to residents of other provinces.
