Dr. Tomas Jurcik

Registered Psychologist

Tomas Jurcik, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist

Dr. Tomas Jurcik is no stranger to the seaside lifestyle. His love of travel and search for knowledge has taken him everywhere from Australia to Montreal. Dr. Jurcik holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Concordia University, with most of his extensive research exploring culture and mental health. He has taught graduate level courses in assessment at Adler University in Vancouver and numerous other courses overseas. When he is not helping clients, he enjoys listening to music, having lively debates with friends and family and keeping fit amidst the coastal beauty of British Columbia.

Dr. Jurcik believes productive change through therapy is achieved when there is an effective relationship between psychologist and client, one that includes shared goals, trust and collaboration. He works to first build a solid relationship with his clients through empathy and understanding. Once there is a strong foundation, he draws on evidence-based therapeutic approaches to help his clients tackle problems.

Dr. Jurcik specializes in treating mood, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders with cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). He treats depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder, phobias and fears, and generalized anxiety, social anxiety and health anxiety. He understands how these conditions change the way his clients perceive the world around them, and he helps them reframe their thoughts and actions to be more healthful and useful. He also treats psychosis and sleep disorders.

Dr. Jurcik gets that life can be overwhelming. He helps his clients address their insecurities and stresses so they can feel confident in their ability to handle life’s ups and downs. Whether his clients are experiencing burnout, work problems or trouble managing their anger, he has targeted strategies that work. He also helps clients who are high achievers, perfectionists and procrastinators explore any underlying self-criticism or self-esteem issues that keep them from reaching their full potential.

Dr. Jurcik understands relationships can bring a wealth of meaning but also pain. When things get rocky or toxic, he is there with a guiding hand and compassionate ear to lead both families and couples through their relationship difficulties. He also treats trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), loneliness, social skills, attachment problems and sexual orientation difficulties.
