Terry Mitchell, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist

Dr. Terry Mitchell is a compassionate and supportive clinical psychologist. After earning her Ph.D. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Dr. Mitchell became a counseling faculty member at Memorial University. Charmed by the East Coast, she set about exploring the rest of the Maritimes. She coordinated for the Prince Edward Island Heart Health Initiative, then joined Dalhousie University’s Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, before returning to Ontario. There, she worked as a breast cancer researcher affiliated with Sunnybrook and Women’s College Hospital and as a professor for Wilfrid Laurier University’s Psychology Department. She is now a respected Professor Emeritus. Throughout her career, Dr. Mitchell has maintained a private practice to support individuals in healing from childhood sexual abuse, advanced cancer and complex trauma.

A lifelong advocate for trauma recovery, Dr. Mitchell supports Indigenous communities,  survivors of childhood sexual abuse and individuals facing life-changing diagnoses such as cancer. Her doctoral research, conducted with Indigenous communities in the Yukon, was pioneering in examining the effects of childhood sexual abuse and the legacy of residential schools. Her publications explore complex topics in trauma and healing. By combining clinical expertise with community-based research, Dr. Mitchell has fostered resilience and healing pathways for those affected by systemic and historical trauma.

Dr. Mitchell uses various evidence-based interventions, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Dr. Mitchell understands the complex ways trauma can impact our lives.
