Dr. Yue Lyu

Registered Psychologist

Yue Lyu, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist

Dr. Yue Lyu grew up in mainland China. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Beijing Normal University. She then moved to the United States, where she earned her master’s degree at the University of Minnesota and her Ph.D. at the University of North Dakota. Her pre-doctoral internship in Florida sparked her love for the ocean. She settled in Nova Scotia to stay close to the sea.

During therapy, Dr. Lyu creates a warm, genuine and safe space where young adults and adults can feel seen and understood. She facilitates deeper self-understanding for her clients by exploring their childhood experiences, relational history, cultural backgrounds, intersecting identities and other parts of their story. By helping her clients connect the dots between past experiences and present-day struggles, Dr. Lyu shows them how their past experiences shape their feelings, thoughts and actions today. She guides her clients in recognizing past survival strategies that might not be serving them anymore and developing new, adaptive patterns that align with their values and true self.

Dr. Lyu deals with a variety of issues, including anxiety, self-esteem, and relationship issues between romantic partners, family members, friends and coworkers. She also treats trauma, including abuse, complex trauma and race/identity-based trauma. She is keen on helping women, international students, immigrants and the BIPOC community embrace their intersecting identities, navigate complex social and cultural landscapes and celebrate their strength and resilience.

Dr. Lyu believes clients are the expert on their problems and they have the inner resources to heal and grow from the past pains. Her therapy is rooted in culturally informed evidence-based practices. This includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion focused therapy (CFT), emotionally focused therapy (EFT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

Dr. Lyu’s research interests lie in positive psychology, the career development of international students, and advocacy for social justice and marginalized communities.

At CRUX, Dr. Lyu provides therapy to adults (19 years of age or older). Dr. Lyu is a licensed psychologist registered with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology. She works with clients from Nova Scotia. For a copy of Dr. Lyu’s CV, click here.
