Dr. Virginia Newton

Registered Psychologist

Virginia Newton, Ph.D., Registered Psychologist

Dr. Virginia Newton brings compassion, technical experience and a wealth of expertise to CRUX Psychology. She is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Dr. Newton holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology from Fielding Graduate University. She held academic positions at the University of Alberta and other universities before moving into full-time private practice.

She has more than 15 years of experience in outpatient and inpatient settings, often helping individuals with complex clinical presentations. As a neuropsychologist, she specializes in understanding connections among brain function and emotions, and thinking skills and behaviour.

Dr. Newton assesses cognitive concerns related to traumatic brain injury, neurological conditions, ADHD, serious mental illness and somatic symptom disorders such as functional neurological disorder and psychogenic seizure disorders.

Dr. Newton’s experience makes her particularly adept at assessing ADHD. Because there is no single test for ADHD, an accurate diagnosis requires consideration of a number of clinical and psychosocial factors. Dr. Newton excels at using various assessment tools to distinguish between similarly presenting disorders and identify the correct diagnosis or diagnoses. This expertise also translates into therapy. Dr. Newton provides evidence-based neuropsychological counselling and assists clients in improving their real-world functioning by applying learned cognitive strategies.

At CRUX, Dr. Newton offers online treatment services through easy-to-use technologies like Zoom. She provides assessment and therapy services to adults (19 years of age or older). Dr. Newton is a licensed psychologist registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists, Psychological Association of Manitoba and Northwest Territories. Psychologists who are fully registered in other Canadian jurisdictions (such as Alberta) can provide online services to residents of other provinces. She works with clients from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba and Northwest Territories. For a copy of Dr. Newton’s CV, click here.
